NSSF®, The Firearm Industry Trade Association, has awarded Cape Gun Works its Five-Star rating for range excellence. Five stars is the highest rating in NSSF’s star-rating system, which evaluates shooting facilities on appearance, management, shooting sports development and amenities.
Cape Gun Works was the dream of business partners Toby Leary and Brendon Bricklin, who wanted to open a public shooting range serving southeastern Massachusetts. It didn’t happen overnight, but after much due-diligence and several moves, Cape Gun Works occupies 20,000 square feet of commercial space in Hyannis, Mass., and business is thriving.
Leary and Bricklin say they are committed to providing citizens and law enforcement with a safe, clean, professional environment at its range, in its many training classes and at its retail space.
“We are proud to provide this underserved market with a facility developed on a sound business model, and our mission is to maintain this Five-Star experience for our customers as we scale to more locations in the region as well as expand our national ecommerce footprint,” said Bricklin, co-founder of Cape Gun Works.
“Cape Cod residents and visitors are extremely fortunate to have access to this first-class shooting range and retail venue,” said Zach Snow, NSSF Director, Member Development. “The Cape Gun Works team has gone to great effort in developing a customer experience to meet the needs of their community by serving as the catalyst in educating and entertaining their patrons. We’re very pleased to welcome them to our Five-Star range family.”
The range features 15 shooting lanes of 25 yards each, with all featuring head-to-toe ballistic-rated lane dividers. The lanes are rated to handle up to .50-caliber rounds.
Complementing the range is a well-lit classroom where educational classes, including NSSF’s First Shots® and specialty classes for women taught by women, are conducted. Cape Gun Works emphasizes training for all levels of shooters from basic to advanced and nearly all types of shooting disciplines. Specialty classes cover handgun cleaning, first aid, introduction to archery, and private and small group instruction.
The owners enjoy providing specially designed air-rifle events to engage youth in firearm safety and education.
It’s not necessary to have a membership to enjoy Cape Gun Works, but the business offers a robust membership program with various benefit levels covering free range access, exclusive access to ammunition and firearms and special discounts. The retail space is well laid out and showcases new and used firearms, ammunition, optics, safe storage devices, archery products and a variety of accessories.
The business takes pride in being community minded and allows nonprofits to use its classroom at no charge or at a discounted rate. Cape Gun Works hosts blood drives, raises funds for local veterans’ charities (one effort is their Top Shot Invitational that raised over $6,000 in 2022) and organizes fundraisers to support Shriners Hospitals for Children.
In addition to his duties with the range-retail business, Leary is host of a weekly radio show called RapidFire covering all things related to the Second Amendment. The show is distributed on all major podcasting sites and is live streamed on YouTube and other social media outlets. Listeners can even receive an email heads-up for the live stream.
Cape Gun Works has fulfilled the dream of Leary and Bricklin and given residents of southeastern Massachusetts a top-tier facility providing the enjoyment of target shooting, educational growth and camaraderie. It’s easy to see why Cape Gun Works has earned NSSF’s Five-Star Range designation.
